BRIGHTER FUTURES

The Kuskokwim Corporation’s (TKC) Brighter Futures Project launched as an effort to address the high electricity costs faced by our Shareholders. The Project is a multi-angled approach to bring affordable and efficient energy to our region and to our Shareholders everywhere.

Bright Beginnings

The first task under Brighter Futures was TKC’s Lightbulb Project. Residents in rural Alaska face some of the highest energy costs in the nation. We knew it would take time and planning to address energy needs and systems within our regional communities, but we wanted to do something to help make a difference for our people immediately. TKC provided and installed energy efficient light bulbs for every home in our 10 communities. These 10,000 blubs cost homeowners nothing, but instantly reduced their monthly electricity bills.

In Phase II of the Lightbulb Project, we provided the same energy efficient lightbulbs to our Shareholders living in other rural areas of Alaska. Now, as part of Phase III, we are providing this opportunity to our Shareholders anywhere they live.

Lighting the Way Ahead

Knowing that we can’t stop at bulbs, we’ve been taking a deeper look at all things energy in the region. After lengthy conversations and a technical assistance request to the Department of Energy, Office of Indian Energy, TKC recently collaborated on Community Energy Actions Plans for each of our 10 villages, a region-wide plan, and a Regional Wood Industry Opportunities report. The goal of our action plans is to have a roadmap to more affordable, reliable energy throughout our region. Our next steps are to identify energy projects that TKC can pursue both on behalf of our communities and in partnership with our Tribes. Plans include weatherization, improving power infrastructure, energy training and more.

TKC is built on a foundation of being resourceful and working together. This strong framework and history of getting thing done helps us to think innovatively as we work toward our collective Brighter Futures.
