The days are getting longer and the weather is getting warmer, which means many of us will be spending more time out on the water. Whether you’re traveling, hunting, fishing, gathering, or are out on the water recreationally, it’s important to practice boating safety. Here are some tips to keep you and your loved ones safe this summer:
- Check your boat engine, fluids, electrical systems, and other equipment to make sure it is working properly.
- Fill up your gas tank, bring enough gas for your trip, and pack any tools you may need if you break down.
- Make a travel plan and share it! Make sure to include what boat you’re using, who you are traveling with; where you’re going; what route you plan to take, and how long you’re planning on being out. The more details the better!
- Make sure your cell phones and other communication devices are fully charged, packed and protected in water/weather-proof cases or bags. Consider bringing an emergency communication or distress signaling device as well.
- Wear a life jacket! Children under the age of 13 are required by law to wear a proper-fitting life jacket when on an open boat and there should be one proper-fitting life jacket for each person on board. Cold water affects even the best swimmers so adults should wear their life jackets on the water, too.
- Always check the local weather forecast and current weather and water conditions before getting out on the water. Never try to outrun a bad weather forecast and be prepared for unexpected weather changes.
- Travel sober! You should never operate any vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol. While on the water, don’t use any substance that impair your coordination, judgment, or reaction times.
