In June, we announced the official release of Held in Memory, Shared in Story. This book is a collection of teachings, place-based histories, and Elder stories from the Middle Kuskokwim region. A project of TKC ROOTS (Raising Our Own Traditional Stewards) in partnership with Calista Education and Culture and the Alaska Native Language Center, it reflects years of collaborative work to document and honor the voices of Elders and culture bearers across the region.

Stories were gathered in many different ways over time. Some came from historical interviews in partnership with the Kuspuk School District. Others came from Elder gatherings, where small groups met over several days to share memories, teachings, and reflections. Additional stories were shared through Youth culture camps, Cultural Wellness Weeks, and other gatherings where learning and culture come together.
This book captures the knowledge, shared both in writing and orally, of our region. It celebrates the storytellers, the listeners, and all who keep these traditions alive. All of these voices were carefully brought together and compiled by editor Ann Fienup-Riordan, creating a collection that reflects both the depth and diversity of knowledge across the Middle Kuskokwim.
As shared in the foreword by TKC’s President and CEO, Andrea Gusty, these stories are more than reflections of the past. They are a bridge. For those who grew up hearing these teachings, they are a reminder of what has always been known. For those who grew up away from the region, they offer a way back in to reconnect with the voices, places, and knowledge that remain deeply rooted in who we are.
As a gift of appreciation, TKC Elders will receive a free copy of the book (one per household). We also have a limited number of free copies available for Shareholders. Those who are interested may complete our online form at form.jotform.com/kuskokwim/HIMSIS-Book-Signup to request one free book per Shareholder household. Copies will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
If you are not selected to receive a free copy, or you would like to purchase additional copies, Held in Memory, Shared in Story is available online at upcolorado.com/alaska-native-language-center/held-in-memory. Proceeds support cultural learning efforts offered through our TKC ROOTS program.
